We Partner With Your General Dentist For A Healthy Smile For Life

August 24th, 2017

NOW, WE KNOW THAT we’re your orthodontic team, not your dentist. However, we want to help you have healthy teeth for life. And that job goes beyond orthodontics and into a lifetime of good dental care.

That’s why we’re joining with our fellow oral health professionals to dispel the myths about one major dental procedure: root canals. We know that it’s a topic people don’t typically visit about in a favorable light. Root canal therapy has always been a bit of a “whipping boy” in dentistry—and, its reputation is probably undeserved. This is especially true given today’s awesome treatment advancements.

The Most Common Misconception

The problems that lead up to needing a root canal can be painful because they affect your tooth’s pulp and nerves. Oftentimes people associate root canal treatment with the discomfort that made the treatment necessary in the first place. Don’t forget that root canal therapy is the solution, not the problem! And, root canals don’t need to be painful.

Today’s Ingredients For Comfortable Root Canal Treatments:

  1. safe, effective anesthesia
  2. extremely precise tools
  3. incredible imaging technology that enhances how and what we see
  4. shorter treatment times

Hopefully, with great home care habits and regular visits to your dentist, you won’t need root canal therapy at any point in the future. However, just in case it comes up, remember that there’s nothing to be worried about! Root canal treatment helps you keep your own teeth, and keep that beautiful, healthy, straight smile.

If you have a toothache or are in need of a dentist or an endodontist root canal specialist, call us Gorczyca Orthodontics at (925) 757-9000 and we will refer you to the nearest dental professional to find a solution for your dental needs. We are located in the Deer Valley Professional Building at 5201 Deer Valley Road in Antioch, California right behind Deer Valley High School. We work closely with over 100 dentists and dental specialists in the greater East Contra Costa County area.

Here's to your healthy and beautiful smile.

Back To School! Are Checkups Part Of Your Checklist?

August 22nd, 2017

ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS, TOOTH DECAY is one of our most common, modern-day chronic diseases. In fact, by the time children begin kindergarten, 40 percent have some kind of tooth decay! Remember, just because your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews aren’t complaining about tooth pain (and their teeth “look” OK), it doesn’t necessarily mean their teeth are OK.

Fall is a great time to assess your health goals and get back on track after a leisurely summer. Here at our practice we want to remind you how important your routine dental care is during your orthodontic treatment period. While we’re making your smile more beautiful, you need to be sure your teeth, gums, and entire mouth stay as healthy as possible. Be sure your regular dental checkups are part of your back-to-school checklist.

What Your Dentist Will Typically Include In A Regular Checkup Or Back-To-School Exam:

Here are some of the typical components of regular checkups and back-to-school exams:

  1. Thorough Cleaning: Professional cleanings help prevent gum disease—keeping your teeth healthier, longer.
  2. Checking For Cavities: Take care of cavities before they become bigger problems, leading to pain and tooth loss.
  3. Checking Existing Dental Work: That includes fillings, crowns, sealants, etc.
  4. Examining Oral Tissue & Jaw Function: Early detection helps prevent oral cancer and related problems.
  5. Fluoride Application: For cavity prevention.

Important Things You Can Do

  1. Keep orthodontic work clean! Brush twice a day. Brush gently and pay special attention to your gum line.
  2. Teach your entire family the good habit of flossing each day.
  3. Eat healthier snack foods such as fresh fruits and veggies.
  4. Limit sugary snacks & high-carb foods. The bacteria that cause tooth decay love simple sugars—especially those in treats.
  5. If you like to chew gum, choose sugar-free options.
  6. Always talk with our team if you notice any unusual oral health changes or problems with your orthodontic appliances.

A big part of our role is helping parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts better monitor children’s oral (and overall) health. Preventative dental care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and for your family! So be sure to keep your regular appointments.

Protect Your Teeth From The Affects Of Pool Water

August 17th, 2017

PROLONGED POOL WATER EXPOSURE can affect your teeth. One study showed that 39% of swim team members suffered from dental erosion, dental lesions, pits or white spots, on their front teeth. These front tooth spots were found in only 12% of recreational swimmers, while only 3% on non-swimmers had anterior tooth damage.

Avid Swimmers: Protect Your Smile from Pool Water!

If you're on a swim team, play water polo, or swim daily, be aware of the affects of pool water on your teeth. To make your pool water ideal for the protection of your teeth, make sure that your pool water is not only pH neutral but also that it is saturated with hydroxyapatite components.

Pool Water Isn't The Only Risk Factor

Factors that increase the risk of dental erosion include the duration of swimming and the amount of training in pool water. Other extrinsic factors include acidic foods, carbonated beverages, citrus fruits, low pH medications, and occupational exposure to acidic environments. Diseases associated with vomiting and other eating disorders that lower pH in the mouth can also cause dental erosion.

Dental decalcification and erosion caused by pool water may also make it more difficult for your braces to stick on your teeth.

3 Simple Ideas To Protect Your Teeth

If you are a competitive swimmer and you want to protect your teeth from the affects of pool water, here are things you can do:

  1. Drink fluoridated water often and swish your mouth with water, especially right after you work out.
  2. Rinse with a fluoridated mouthwash such as Crest ProHealth Anti-cavity Rinse.
  3. See your dentist regularly for your 6 month check-ups.

If you are an occasional swimmer in pools on vacation or in hotels, chances are you will not be affected by pool water erosion of your teeth. Please pass this information on to others you may know to spend hours working out in the pool.

If you have additional questions about your teeth, visit us at Gorczyca Orthodontics in Antioch, California, www.clubbraces.com, or call us at (925) 757-9000.

We care about you and your beautiful smile. Thank you for the trust you place in our practice and for choosing us as your orthodontist.

Swimmer’s Ear? More Like Swimmer’s Tooth!

August 16th, 2017

HAVE YOUR TEETH ever felt extra sensitive after a swim at the pool? That’s no coincidence, although it can take quite a lot of swimming before the effects become noticeable. What is it about the water in swimming pools that damages teeth?

Chlorine: Good For Sanitation, Bad For Teeth

That’s right: the same chemical that kills many of the germs that love swimming in fresh water as much as we do can also be pretty hard on our teeth if the pool’s pH isn’t carefully regulated. The proper pH for pool water is 7.2-7.8, but it can easily become acidic because of the chlorine.

Swimmer’s Calculus: A Risk For Serious Swimmers

Swimmer’s Calculus isn’t the name of an underwater math class; it’s what happens to tooth enamel after prolonged exposure to acidic chlorine ions. The pH of saliva in a healthy mouth is very close to neutral. It’s the perfect pH to keep your teeth strong (as long as we’re also brushing and flossing).

Acid, like the diluted hydrochloric acid that forms in pools with chlorine, will erode more tooth enamel the longer we swim. This can lead to “swimmer’s calculus,” or yellow and brown stains on our teeth. It can also make our teeth extra sensitive after swimming, because erosion of the enamel exposes the more vulnerable dentin underneath.

Other Underwater Tooth Problems

Maybe you’re not a huge fan of the public pool, but you love snorkeling and diving in natural bodies of water. While you probably won’t have to worry about swimmer’s calculus, those activities come with their own set of tooth-threatening problems.

Scuba Diving And Tooth Squeeze

Diving in the deep end of a pool is enough to make us feel the water pressure in our ears, but did you know that when you dive deep enough, you might feel it in your teeth? Barodontalgia, or tooth squeeze, is what happens when tiny air bubbles trapped in cracks, crevices, and holes in our teeth change size due to pressure. This can cause significant tooth pain and it can even fracture teeth. The best way to prevent it is to visit the dentist before diving season begins.

Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)

Most divers know the inconvenience of the mouthpiece design, but you might not know all the specific ways it’s bad for your teeth. The shape has been described as “one size fits none” because it’s too small and doesn’t really fit most divers’ teeth. Despite the less-than-ideal size and shape, we still have to grip it between our teeth the entire time we dive.

Clenching our jaws for so long, especially when the pressure is mostly on the front teeth, can lead to Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ), which causes jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty chewing. A good solution, particularly for a frequent diver, is to get a custom-fitted molded mouthpiece.
